Research in Effective Vocabulary Video Design
Why video?1. High demand for video instruction. Above data from OpenSlate (2018) shows high demand for online language videos, and YouTube alone has approximately 14 million language-related videos and over 4,000 language-related channels.
2. Video can provide rich contexts for vocabulary learning. The National Reading Panel (2000) concludes that "learning vocabulary in rich contexts is valuable for vocabulary learning" (p. 4-27) after their exhaustive inquiry into past research in vocabulary instruction techniques, which involved cross-referencing 50 experimental and quasi-experimental studies and three meta-analyses (see Stahl & Fairbandks, 1986; Klesius & Searls, 1990; Fukkink & de Glopper, 1998) that dealt with L1 English vocabulary instruction. The Panel also found that computer technology (audiovisual technology in this case) can be helpful if used effectively.

【 Guided Reading Practice (v.1) 】
This app currently only lets you press "Next" and "Back" buttons to display a smallest meaningful chunk of words at a time both in English and Japanese. This is meant to assist Japanese ELLs to think in the English word order while they read in English. Many intended features are still missing (due to lack of my knowledge and skill in Java and Android app development), but they will be added in the future versions. |
Development Process
During the course of this project, I self-taught how to develop Android applications through completing hands-on tutorials in small increments, and developing a collection of small applications. You can see these footsteps by looking at my vlog entries:
- My Android App Development Journey (28 videos)
What I Learned
Through this project, I learned to do the following things:
- Set up the development environment.
- Code in Java.
- Code by using Android SDK.
- Develop a collection of small instructional applications.
