Innovative Teaching Strategies
GamificationI call this in-class activity "Verbal and Visual Limitations." Students learn the strengths and weaknesses of verbal and pictorial information through two types of games: (1) How much can you explain? and (2) advanced charade, which are followed by in-class discussions and wiki assignment.

Virtual Field TripsI adopted Dr. Justin Olmanson's original lesson (School Technology Survey), but modified how students would report their surveys about school technology. In my version, students create short 2 minute-long video reports, which we watch in a classroom to have virtual field trips. Although it's virtual, we get to visit 20+ schools this way.

Flipped with In-Video Self-ChecksI took a regular flipped classroom model and made it more efficient by integrating self-checks within video lessons. In-video self-check questions help students focus on the key information at the right moment. As an added bonus, since self-checks are monitored and graded, most students do watch video lessons now (video view rate went from 30% to 90%).

Visual Literacy TrainingsI help my students develop their visual literacy skills through a systematic 3 step approach that consists of (1) concept learning, (2) analysis and critique, and (3) creation.

Teaching InnovationThroughout the semester, students will research and identify problems with current instructional practices, and develop an innovative solution to the identified problems. Each students will demonstrate their innovative teaching strategies at the end of the semester.
