Good vs. Bad
This assignment is designed to reinforce students' understanding of the 8 graphic design principles introduced in the self-check video. Each student web-searches and finds images that are examples of good and poor applications of each graphic design principle and submits them with annotations via Google Document (see Figure 1).
The 8 Graphic Design Principles
Below are the eight principles for designing effective images for students' learning.
- Choice of background
- Use of colors
- Figure/ground contrast
- Image size
- Alignment and pattern
- Brightness/Lighting
- Detail & realism
- Choice of subject
Document Layout
Students download the document template and fill it out as instructed below (Figure 2).
Examples
Below (Figures 3 & 4) are examples of how students are supposed to complete their documents.
The above example on the left (Figure 2) shows good and poor applications of background choice. Each picture must be annotated to explain how well or poorly the graphic design principle is applied. The other example (Figure 3) shows good and poor applications of detail and realism.

This is one of the first assignments in this class, and I set the standard and make my expectation clear by being strict about the accuracy of their applications and explanations of the design principles.
